Final Journal on the Appalachian Trail

Lisa Garrett and Francis Tapon thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail (AT) southbound in the summer of 2001. You can the PDF of the map.

Francis wrote a book on the seven lessons he learned on the trail.

We were usually light and fast; normally it takes 5-7 months to hike the AT, but we did it in 3 months and 3 weeks.

Key to our strategy was to GoLite! Indeed, our average pack weight was only seven pounds!

Trail Name: Mr. Magoo

Real Name: Francis Tapon

Background: Religion Major and Harvard MBA leaving Silicon Valley behind for the riches of nature.

Goal: Discover the laws on how to get the most out of life.

Origin of the trail name: Like Mr. Magoo, Francis has lots of dumb luck; misfortune may be all around, but somehow he's unaffected!

What's he doing now? Promoting his first book and writing his second one on Eastern Europe!

Trail Name: Cartwheel

Real Name: Lisa Garrett

Background: Worked for a real estate development manager.

Goal: Finish the trail!

Origin of the trail name: Lisa had a pack that weighed less than 8 pounds with food and water, so one thru-hiker suggested that she should be doing cartwheels up the mountain.

What's she doing now? Working at a small construction company while going back to school to get a degree in business.
